Did you know that not all dental decay/cavities cause pain right away? So, how can you tell if you have a cavity?
What Causes Cavities?
Cavities are caused by acids in the mouth that over time, break down tooth enamel. These acids are a result of the bacteria consuming sugars and starches from food and drink. If teeth are not cleaned thoroughly, the food matter remains on and/or between the teeth resulting the acids dissolving tooth enamel causing the cavities.
Although the cavity will start small on the tooth surface, if not detected and treated early on, the cavity will become larger and deeper as the acids dissolve away more of the tooth structure. Once the cavity reaches deeper into the tooth, discomfort starts and eventually will lead to extreme tooth ache as the cavity reaches the nerve of the tooth.
How Can You Tell If You Have a Cavity?
The best way to avoid tooth decay is to ensure you are thoroughly brushing and flossing your teeth at least two times a day. It is important to use a fluoridated toothpaste to protect teeth against decay. A healthy, low sugar diet is best for dental health. Adequate water intake is vital to keep the mouth hydrated.
It is recommended that you keep a healthy dental regime by having 6 monthly check up and cleans with your dentist. When necessary, your dentist will also take the relevant x-rays to check in between teeth and under any existing fillings/crowns. If check-up’s are regular, your dentist will be able to detect your dental decay at an early stage meaning minimal treatment will be needed to fix the tooth. Your dental team will also be able to educate you in correct cleaning techniques and diet to help you keep decay away!
