What Is Happy Gas?

Did you know that we offer happy gas at our clinic?  Happy gas, also known as Nirtous Oxide is very safe and commonly used for a range of medical procedures.  We often use happy gas at our clinic to help with anxious patients, longer appointments and younger patients.

How Does It Work?

If a patient is using happy gas, we put a small mask over the patients nose.  This mask is connected to our oxygen tank and nitrous oxide tank.  The dentist will turn the tanks on to the right dosage for the patient.  The patient then breaths in and out through their nose to inhale the gas.  It only take as few minutes for the patient to feel the effects of the gas.  The patient will stay wide awake during procedures and still be able to hear the dental team, but it just gives the patient a care free type feeling.  Some people explain the sensation as that of floating, relaxing and soothing but the gas gets the nickname “Happy Gas” as few people do get the giggles with it too!

Is It Safe?

Nitrous Oxide is perfectly safe – even being used during a woman’s labor! Towards the end of your dental appointment, the dentist will turn off the nitrous tank leaving just the oxygen running. This will make the affects of the nirtous wear off very quickly.  Usually, once the dentist has finished the treatment the patient will feel back to normal.  It is also perfectly safe to drive after happy gas.  This is because the body can metabolize it very quickly and your motor skills are not in affected either.
