Dental Health Week 2024

Dental Health Week 2024 is upon us!

This year we focus on the importance of gum health and how much can impact your overall dental health.

Healthy gums should not bleed.  Bleeding gums can be a sign of gingivitis and/or periodontal disease.  Inadequate removal of plaque can cause these issues.  This reinforces the importance of good oral hygiene at home, and regular six-monthly checkups and cleans by your dental team.

Smoking has a very negative affect on our overall health, but also on our gums. It increases the risk of producing bacterial plaque, which leads to gum disease.  Smoking Causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, so the infected gums don’t heal.  It Changes the type of bacteria in dental plaque, increasing the number of bacteria that are more harmful.  All of these things increase the risk of gum disease, and at an accelerated rate.

Flossing is one of those things that patients often report as a rare part of their dental hygiene regime.  Never fear, it’s never too late to start it up!  Flossing removes the nasty plaque from in between our teeth and under the gum.  Remember, you have not cleaned all of the surfaces of your teeth until you have brushed and flossed!
