Our oral health plays a crucial role in our overall well being. Our mouths contain loads of bacteria – most of which are perfectly harmless. However, the mouth is the very start of our digestive and respiratory tracts and therefore any harmful bacteria can be spread into our body from here. Think of it as the entry point to your system.
Our saliva also play a very important role in maintaining a healthy mouth and body. Many medications such as decongestants, antihistamines, painkillers, diuretics and antidepressants – can reduce the production of saliva. With a dry mouth, food is not easily washed away and the mouth becomes more acidic. This then leads to the production of harmful microbes causing dental decay and disease.
There has been links between poor oral health and problems with heart, cardiovascular disease and pregnancy and birth complications to name a few. There are also some diseases that may affect oral health such as diabetes, HIV, osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s.
