World NO Tobacco Day

Did you know that today is World NO Tobacco Day?  Are you some one that struggles with cigarette addiction?  Perhaps some one you care about?   Tobacco has many implications on your health.  The most well known health issue from Tobacco smoke is of course, the implications on the lungs and heart.  Furthermore, Tobacco smoke can cause a plethora of serious diseases and in some cases can even be fatal!  It is also very detrimental to your teeth and gums.  Today, I would like to take the opportunity to inform people about the relationship with tobacco smoke and dental health.

Tobacco Smoke and Dental Disease

Periodontal disease is a major issue which affects the gums and the bone that supports our teeth.  The gums of a smoker are affected because smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, so the infected gums don’t heal. Smoking causes people to have more dental plaque and causes gum disease to get worse more quickly than in non-smokers. Gum disease is still the most common cause of tooth loss in adults.  In severe cases, teeth become mobile and can even fall out!  This is caused by a build up of bacteria under the gums.  Although regular dental cleans can arrest the rate of bone and gum loss, the damage cannot be reversed.  Tobacco is a major cause of this disease and we see many cases where teeth are lost due to this.

Smoking is very hazardous to all of your mouth – not just the teeth and gums.  It can be a major contributor to oral cancers on the tongue, lips, cheeks and throat.  Here at Ipswich Dental Care, you will notice that our dental professionals will always check your tongue and soft tissues as a part of your routine check up appointment.

What Can You Do?

Alongside regular checkups with your GP and 3 to 6 monthly visits with our Dentist and Oral Health Therapist, there is plenty of support out there for people who really wish to quit smoking.  I have added a link for you to browse some help lines and support people.  Giving up the cigarettes will make you gain so much more.  Your taste improves.  Your sense of smell.  Sinus issues and overall well being.  As dental professionals we can help to arrest any dental disease and improve your dental status both physically and aesthetically.  We are always here for support and help.
